The Road to Salem kicked into high gear for CIAA Football as conference play began in earnest with five cross divisional matchups on the weekend slate. The week four schedule also featured Chowan hitting the road and Shaw playing at home against non-conference opponents.
Shaw 49, Edward Waters 10 FINAL
After a 0-2 start, Shaw won their second consecutive game with a 49-10 win over Edward Waters in their final non-conference game of the season. The Bears jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter courtesy of a 35-yard run from Daniel Bender on the opening drive and a 5-yard pass from Torrin Campbell to Malik Odom midway through the quarter. Campbell tossed another touchdown pass early in the second to Kevonta Moses from 20 yards out and the Bears went into halftime with a 21-10 lead. In the second half, Shaw would run off 28 unanswered points that included a trio of Campbell touchdown passes from 15, 47, and 22 yards. Campbell completed 16 of 23 passes for 222 yards and 5 touchdown passes while Sidney Gibbs ran for 127 yards on 16 carries. Justin Daniels led the Bears defense with 10 tackles, including six solos.

Virginia Union 16, Winston-Salem State 15 FINAL
In a back and forth defensive battle, kicker Jefferson Souza nailed a game winning 25-yard field goal with 21 second left to give Virginia Union a narrow win over Winston-Salem State, 16-15. After a scoreless first quarter, the Rams went up 9-0 late in the second on five yard touchdown pass from Naill Ramadan to Chandler Belk to cap off a 16-play, 92-yard drive. Virginia Union would respond when Khalid Morris found Jaiden Reavis for an 11-yard touchdown pass to make it 9-7 at the half. Souza provided the only points of the third quarter with a 25-yard field goal that gave the Panthers their first lead of the game at 10-9. WSSU would score early in the fourth on a 1-yard run by Farrell Murchinson regain the lead by Souza would deliver a pair of late field goals, including the game winner, to secure the win. WSSU’s Quarderm Sloane had 147 all-purpose yards, including 100 yards on the ground. Panthers running back Tabyus Taylor had 106 all-purpose yards (76 rushing, 30 receiving) while teammate Tyrone Glanton had a game-high eight tackles.

Livingstone 35, Lincoln (PA) 19 FINAL
Off to their best start since 2014, Livingstone remained unbeaten on the season and secured the first conference win with a 35-19 road win over Lincoln (PA). The Blue Bears took an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of touchdown runs by Andrew Faraimo (1 yard) and Tyrell Baldwin (8 yards). A blocked punt by Lincoln and recovery in end zone by Sadique Moore cut the lead to 14-7 early in the second quarter. Both teams would exchange 2-yard touchdown runs late in the second, making it 21-13 at halftime. The Blue Bears would score the game’s next 14 points on a pair of Miles Hayes touchdown passes to essentially put the game away. Hayes scored three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) while Ziah Gibson led the Blue Bears defense with six tackles, including three tackles for loss, and two sacks. Lincoln’s Shoye Sampson caught four passes for 84 yards while teammate Rob Thomas had a game-high eight tackles.

McKendree 42, Chowan 35 FINAL
Chowan took a tough road loss to McKendree, 42-35, in one of two non-CIAA matchups on the day. Similar to last week, the Hawks got down by as many as 21 points in the first half before making a second half comeback but it wasn’t enough. Imeek Watkins capped off a 13-play, 69-yard drive with a 2-yard run to cut the deficit to 21-7 at halftime. Bryce Witt and Shavon Harkless powered the Hawks offense with four combined touchdowns in the second half, including a 1-yard run by Harkless to tie the game at 35 in the fourth quarter. But, the CU defense surrendered a touchdown with less than five minutes to play that would ultimately seal their fate. Witt threw for 232 yards, ran for 183 more, and scored two touchdowns. Aristotle Bowles had a game-high 11 tackles, including four solos.

#23 Bowie State 54, Saint Augustine’s 6 FINAL
Nationally-ranked Bowie State began their quest for a second straight CIAA title by routing Saint Augustine’s, 54-6, in a cross-division conference matchup. Ja’rome Johnson delivered a pair of passing touchdowns and rushed for two more scores in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 28-0 halftime lead. Johnson tossed two more touchdowns in the second half, a 7-yarder to DuShon David and a 36-yard strike to Dante Waugh, and Elisha McDonald would break for a 50-yard touchdown that made it 51-0 late in the third quarter. Saint Augustine’s would get on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter when D’Ontre Gilliard found E’Kwan White for a 50-yard touchdown pass. BSU’s Johnson completed 19 of 29 passes for 307 yards and combined for six touchdowns (four passing, two rushing) and David caught seven balls for 117 yards and two scores for the Bulldogs. Gilliard had 139 yards of total offense for SAU and teammate Durrell Nash had a game-high 11 total tackles.

Fayetteville State 55, Elizabeth City State 12 FINAL
In a game televised nationally on Aspire TV, Fayetteville State ran away with a 55-12 win over Elizabeth City State at the 22nd Annual Down East Viking Football Classic in Rocky Mount. The Broncos started fast with a 32-yard touchdown run by Stevie Green on their opening drive and built a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter thanks to a pair of Richard Latimer touchdown passes. ECSU’s Kendrick Patterson connected with Dajuan Greene on two second quarter touchdowns, including a 75-yard bomb and a 2-yard score with one second left to cut the deficit to 35-12 at halftime. FSU got rushing scores from three different players in the fourth quarter, including 41-yarder from Green, to put the game out of reach for good. Green ran for 154 of the Broncos 292 rushing yards and three touchdowns. ECSU’s Greene caught seven passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Bronco defender Chrishon Springs finished with a game-high 10 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks along with two forced fumbles.

Virginia State 31, Johnson C. Smith 15 FINAL
In the fifth and final cross division matchup to kick off conference play, Virginia State defeated visiting Johnson C. Smith, 31-15, for their third straight win. JCSU got out to an early 9-0 lead in the first quarter on a 17-yard scoring run by Emanuel Wilson followed by a 37-yard field goal from Cristian Benitez. Virginia State would respond with 31 unanswered points that featured touchdown runs by three different Trojans, including Cordelral Cook who also threw a pass for a score (37-yarder to Kier Townsend) during that span. The Golden Bulls would add a score late in the game when Malik Evans found Janarius Hood for 27 yards but it wasn’t enough to overcome the VSU lead. Cook led the Trojans with 158 yards through the air as well as 63 yards on the ground and two total touchdowns. Wilson ran for 143 yards on 15 carries and a score for the Golden Bulls, averaging 9.5 yards per carry. VSU’s William Lulu had a game-high 12 tackles, including 10 solos and 2.5 tackles for loss.
